Reusing videotapes is oh so chic with this project.

Hardly anyone I know has a use for videotapes anymore. Most people I know download their movies, get them directly from an easy mail service like Netflix, or buy DVDs at the least. It's rare that I come across an active collection of videotapes. But, alas, I come across nonactive collections of videotapes all of the time. A lot of people don't use their videotapes anymore, but they're not sure what to do with them. Perhaps predictably, I'd suggest you find new uses for the videotapes. As I write this, I'm wearing a necklace I made from a tape reel straight out of a videotape and the compliments on it from complete strangers have been nonstop. (It's been an awesome opportunity to talk about my passion for reusing). You can make something like this, too.

How to make a hip necklace from a videotape reel:

1. Locate your videotape reel.

This is going to require cracking open your videotape case. It's not all that hard—I did it with my bare hands. You'll be surprised at how easily these things crack apart.

2. Once you've got the reel out of the case, take out all of the tape.

This will take a while. (Keep the tape aside if you'd like because you can always use it for other videotape projects).

3. Find some sort of paper you'd like to decorate the background of the tape with.

I found some sheet music.

4. Figure out a way to decorate the background of the reel with your paper. I cut out the letters to spell the word 'LIVE' in the background of mine. Glue down your design. Then, heat something sharp and melt two holes through the top of the reel. I used one of the little pokers from a fondue set. 6. Attach a chain, using jewelry pliers, or string through the holes and enjoy! This project is a great way to make use of those old videotapes in a fashionable way and attract attention from friends and strangers alike—presenting the opportunity to talk about your green lifestyle.
