Tommy Lee may be a rock star on a nationwide quest in Battleground Earth, using his renown to spread the good green word. But there?s an eco-friendly move that rockers across the country can make, famous or not?they can green their guitars.

There are thousands and thousands of guitars sold every year, and most of them are crafted from either mahogany or rosewood?which come primarily from trees in tropical areas and rain forests. As you?re likely aware, the rain forests are under constant threat of destruction?and the guitar industry, while not the largest contributor to the problem by any stretch of the imagination, continues to exacerbate the crisis by using endangered trees for wood in guitar making.

Recently though, some companies have pioneered using alternative woods to build their axes?Modulus and SoundWood, for example, are focused on using 100 percent non-endangered wood for their new models. And the companies' green experiments have won them some big-name fans: Pearl Jam, the Rolling Stones, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are just a few acts that have switched to Modulus's green guitars.

And for an axe that gives a whole new meaning to green guitar check out Spinal Tap's Global Warming Guitar, replete with a working thermometer running up the fretboard.
