If you would rather not throw your guitar strings away, make a necklace.
If you've ever wanted to make jewelry from your guitar strings and found the process difficult, if not impossible—I understand. Working with guitar strings as a wire foundation for jewelry isn't as simple as it might seem from afar. And yet, reusing guitar strings is something most green guitarists want to do. (Note: this project isn't just for green guitarists. If you are in a relationship with, akin to, a colleague, roommate, or friend of a guitarist--ask him or her for their spare strings!) You've got to change guitar strings every three months at least (and that's if you're using the long-lasting brands, like Elixir, that I use). Having to change your strings so often leaves a whole lot of strings either lying around or in your garbage.
I succeeded in making a necklace a few days ago which included a guitar string, among other items, and you can do it, too.
How to make a cool guitar string necklace:
1. Locate your guitar string.
It is the core of this project. (And while you're at it, forgive my painted fingers in the picture). Use a wire cutter to get the string just the size you want.
Thread your guitar string through a bead of some sort. The bigger, the better.
3. Thread a second section of string through any other random beads you have and then thread the entire second string ensemble through the larger bead.
4. Thread any other type of string but guitar string through the big bead and around your neck.
This could be a leather piece, a chain, or whatever else you like to make necklaces with. I used a clear nylon string for this necklace. When everything is in place, fill in the ends of the bead, through which all of the elements of this awesome necklace run, with glue. Fasten your necklace in the back with a tie or backing from a craft store like Michael's and enjoy! This necklace helps you put a guitar string to use as well as other spare craft materials that seem to always be lying around—at least in my house. Viva Craftiness!
