Thick high-waisted belts came back in style a while ago. And they're still popular. They have this really convenient way of slimming just about any woman's waistline if worn correctly. But why buy them? Like everything else I feature here in our DIY posts, these kinds of belts are just another item that can be created out of old things you already have around the house. Approaching your wardrobe this way not only yields creative clothes and accessories, but it saves all of us resources while helping you to make use of something old and save money. DIY fashion projects like these are green...and fun!

You can make your own thick high-waisted belt from an old pair of opaque panty hose—preferably leggings. It's important that the material be stretchy. Although I clearly recall the image of Jennifer Lopez sporting a steel-like high-waisted belt on a magazine cover once, I guarantee you that these belts aren't any fun without some elasticity. Which is why panty hose and leggings work perfectly.

If you want to make your own thick high-waisted belt, follow these steps:

Choose pantyhose or leggings

Locate your panty hose or leggings. Wrap one leg of the panty hose or leggings around your waist where you'd like the belt to sit. Add about four inches to whatever this length is and cut off that much of the tights or leggings. I'd suggest cutting off the foot of the panty hose or leggings too, but that's up to you.

Cut hole

Cut a hole in one end of the fabric.

Wrap fabric and pull through

Wrap the fabric around your waist and pull the end without the hole through the end with the hole. Pull it tightly and gauge how tight you'd like the belt to be. Once you figure that out, cut another hole in the fabric where the end pulled through the first hole reaches. Pull that end through the new hole and wrap around the entire belt a few times.

Enjoy! This is a really easy way to make one of these trendy belts without buying anything new.
