This project will help you turn an unused necktie into a funky headband.

Neckties, environmentally speaking, can be an eco-nightmare. They're much more mass-produced than necessary—particularly for holidays (Father's Day, anyone?), and many of them sit around in closets or are trashed soon after receipt. But as a crafter, neckties hold endless possibilities for reuse. So if you've got a necktie lying around your home that isn't being used (or if you like this project so much that you want to go to a thrift store and pick one up), why not make a cool summer headband out of it? The headband I make from the neckties I come across is easy and stylish and, above all else, a green way to accessorize and keep your hair out of your face during the hot summer.

How to make a cool headband from a necktie:

1. Locate your necktie.

Make sure it's a pattern you would actually wear as a headband. Santa Claus and his reindeer, for instance, might not be your best design bet for a summer headband. Unless you're wanting to be ironic. Which is also hip. Or so I hear...

2. Wrap the skinny end of the tie around your head to get a feel for the length you'll need.

Once you figure that out, cut it an inch or two past that length.

3. Tuck the cut-off end of the tie into the triangular end.

Cut another piece of fabric off from the original tie and use that piece of fabric to tie the two ends together. (Simply tying the ends together that you already have for the headband works too, but it makes it easier for your headband to come undone—which is the last thing I need to worry about while slathering my skin with sunblock).

4. Wrap around your head and enjoy! This project helps you to reuse neckties and achieve a stylish look without buying anything new. Perfect.
