Thanks to State Representative Andrea M. Boland, a Democrat from Sanford, Maine, the Pine Tree State may become the first to require cell phone manufacturers to put a warning on packing about the potential risks of radiation. Boland cites a 2006 study by the Swedish National Institute for Working Life that showed "a correlation between brain tumors and heavy cell phone use, and a recent report by a retired engineer and consumer advocate, Lloyd Morgan, that compiled research showing that cell phones can lead to an increased risk of brain tumors."

Morgan's report, for example, claims that the industry's own research showed cell phones caused brain tumors, independent research shows there is risk of brain tumors from cell phone use, and the danger of brain tumors from cell phone use is highest in children, and the younger a child is when he/she starts using a cell phone, the higher the risk. In addition, says Morgan, "cell phone radiation damages DNA, an undisputed cause of cancer."

Since this is far from the first warning related to cell phone usage, here are some suggestions from the National Institutes of Health:

- Have lengthy phone conversations on a conventional telephone (landline) instead of your cell phone

-Use a headset and place the phone away from your body

-Find out how much SAR energy your cell phone gives off
