We have never owned a DVD player because we have always watched them on our computer; many people don't own stereos any more as they use their computer and their iPod. The next step is to get rid of the television altogether and watch TV on you computer, as well. Hank at EcoGeek suggests some of the modern, easier ways to do it now, while we add a few of our own:

1. Cut the cable and download your favorite shows: This saves the most money but the list of shows that you can buy legally on iTunes is pretty limited.

2. Install a TV tuner card: These come with great capture software now, so you can make your computer act like a TiVo. EcoGeek tells us that there are now external ones that connect between your cable and a USB port. We have found that the resolution of a television, however, does not match that of a monitor, and the picture quality is not as good as on a TV (or at least not what you have come to expect when watching DVDs on the computer).

3. Just forget about television altogether: All the good shows now dominate the racks at Blockbuster and are usually on the shelves in DVD format as soon as the series is over. You get better quality and no commercials.
