Keys by Kristen O'Reilly for Idiosyncratic Style

Here's a quick craft that poetic souls will enjoy for Valentine's Day.

Idiosyncratic Style has an excellent project idea inspired by old keys, and the instructions are so open-ended, you can easily put your personal touch on this quirky piece of jewelry.

There are only three steps, and they are as follows:

1. Gather keys: Old house or office keys you don't use anymore, vintage skeleton keys from a thrift store, etc.

2. Decorate.

3. Attach to necklace chain, a brooch pin, cuff links, etc. You are done!

Given that the second step is the most important of all however, here are 9 ideas for upcycling your key into a jewelry-worthy token.

Paint your key solid. Or use a small brush, and do detail work on your key.

Wrap a featherin its center. Soft plume + hard metal = suddenly cool key.

Glue small, fake rhinestone studs to it.

Wrap your key in fabric.

Decoupage it with scraps from a magazine or newspaper.

Affix an exciting-looking button to its flat base.

Wrap colored copper wire around the long, skinny part of the key.

Don't fight the urge to cover it in glitter. Your key, your rules.

Secure tacks all over it with strategically placed Gorilla Glue. Danger key!

Link lockets or old charms to the loop in top part of the key.

Draw a face on the flat part of the key. (Then turn it into a full-fledged person key).

Once you are finished embellishing your key, dive inside your old jewelry box for long-abandoned necklaces. Steal their chains, take them apart, link them together with a pair of needlenose pliers, and drop your awesome key onto its length with the help of a jump ring. Send to the lucky party with a small note, and sweet sentiment.
