Laura MacLean appeared on Emeril's show to get some ideas about staying on track after managing to lose 130 pounds. Think about the kind of lifestyle changes it takes to lose 130 pounds. Then think about the power of making changes like that permanent. It's amazing. Doesn?t it motivate you to make just one little change for the better, starting now? It's like Tolstoy said, "Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself." Well, here are five ways to start proving Tolstoy wrong.

1. Tell someone what you plan to do. Yep, it's true. Saving face by doing what we said we would is a great motivator.

2. Write a goal down, even if it seems minor or mundane. For example, "I will bike to work at least twice a week for the next month." It's thought that writing goals down makes them significantly more likely to be realized. Why not write it down repeatedly until it sticks?

3. Which leads to not giving up if the goal doesn't stick. Just start over. No dwelling, no beating yourself up, but most importantly, no giving up.

4. Don't look at the big picture all of the time. No one single person can save the whole planet or change her whole life in a single swoop. Better to commit to walking every day and hanging clothes on the line once a week, and go from there.

5. Be inspired by others who achieve great goals. Like Laura MacLean losing 130 pounds. Or a kid who bikes to Washington D.C. to raise awareness for electric cars. These heroes provide great fuel for kick starting our own goals.
