Adopt a Turkey
When it comes to celebrating Thanksgiving in America, it's always been all about the bird. Here's a novel idea, however: Feed a turkey instead of eating it. (This vegetarian writer is getting ready to truss up her Tofurky for Thursday's festivities.)
At Farm Sanctuary, you can adopt a turkey for a one-time free of $20. You get a color photo of your new feathered friend, an adoption certificate, your turkey's biography, and a one-year subscription to the non-profit's quarterly newsletter. In the past 20 years, Farm Sanctuary has rescued thousands of would-be Thanksgiving main courses from harsh factory-farm and slaughterhouse conditions.
And on Turkey Day tomorrow? Farm Sanctuary stuff and volunteers in shelters in Watkins Glen, NY and Orland, Calif. will be preparing a buffet of squash, cranberries, pumpkin pie, and other vegetarian treats for their turkey guests of honor, who will be stuffing themselves for a change. ::Adopt a Turkey
