Contrary to Hitchcock's nightmare, it's the birds who should be scared. As many as 80 million birds are killed each year by collisions with reflective windows. Nearly 200 million birds collide fatally with radio-transmission towers per year. Add in cell phone towers and that number approaches a half-billion. Some 60 to 80 million birds are killed each year by motor vehicles. And I haven't even factored in domestic cats, environmental toxins, habitat fragmentation, poaching, hunting, or the meat-based diet.

The American Bird Conservancy (ABC) explains:

"A new bill, the Federal Bird-Safe Buildings Act of 2010 (H.R. 4797), calls for each public building newly constructed, acquired, or altered by the federal government to incorporate, to the maximum extent possible, bird-safe building materials and design features. The legislation would require the government to take similar actions on existing buildings where practicable. This has already been demonstrated to be attainable, as some newer government buildings are already bird-friendly. This bill will help prevent the deaths of millions of birds that collide with windows at thousands of federal buildings across the country."These Links Are For the Birds 9 Human Activities That Threaten Birds and Why We Need to Effect Change No How to Attract Birds to Your Yard
