Last week, The New York Times took a look at the admirably eco-friendly Barcelona apartment of designer and Treehugger correspondent Petz Scholtus. The apartment, which Scholtus purchased with the help of a loan from an ethical bank, is filled with clever, inspiring green design elements like...
Bidon Lamps
Scholtus explains how to make these lamps on her blog. All you need is a translucent plastic container (she finds hers on the streets), a CFL bulb, a bulb fitting, and a knife.
Second-Hand Goods
She has a handful of cool vintage lamps, but even cooler are the found objects that she upcycled: a chair from the street, which she covered with recycled newspaper, and a mirror from the street which she turned into a sliding door. Her dining table is a glass slab found in the apartment.
Cork Floor
Cork is sustainable, fast growing, looks cooler than most wood, is a natural insulator, and can be laid without the use of glue or adherents. What's not to love? More cork info here.
Composting
There's a compost bin on the small terrace (obviously)...just another reminder that composting can happen in small spaces.
