Working in an office, despite its benefits, comes with a lot of demands. Working in an office is a team effort. Each person needs to do their part and get along while at the job--if they don't, the entire office system will collapse. Although I work from home now, I was in an office for years before. I was always the person trying to brighten the room as much as possible and I feel as though that role is an important one in an office situation. Some people brighten their offices up by bringing in dozens of (typically unhealthy) donuts or expensive bottles of wine, for instance. I, however, believe in brightening the office without costing the environment a cent.
Cheer up your colleagues however you choose, but if you're looking for guidance on getting started, consider doing the following:
1.Bake eco-friendly treats.
While doughnuts are great tasting, the truly eco-friendly thing to do is to bring in an organic treat as possible. I'm talking healthy, homemade, and/or comprised of organic ingredients. Treats are a great way to make someone feel good, but make sure the treats you choose are responsible ones.
2.Support eco-friendly beverages.
From beers to wines, organic and eco-friendly beverages are popping up left and right. If you need to crack open a drink in celebration at an office event, try doing it while simultaneously supporting a progressive company.
3.Show love for green products.
A nice message on a post-it note. An office party with paper plates. The list goes on of office supplies that are normally wasting trees by the second, but you can undo this by at least buying recycled paper products. Not only will you be doing something positive for the planet, but you'll be showing others, through example, that bringing office cheer doesn't have to come at the cost of the environment
If you work in an office, I challenge you to be that person who makes others smile (smiles leave no carbon footprint). It's amazing how much easier work can be if your colleagues are all in a good mood. Just remember to lighten the atmosphere of your office in the greenest way possible.
