It's May. That means that summer is just around the bend. You've probably taken down some of your winterization materials. Your blackout curtains are probably stashed at the back of the closet. Your space heater may be residing in the nether recesses of your attic.
Now, you're going to want to get ready to deal with the heat. You've probably cleaned your AC, got it all ready for those sweltering summer days. And you may have put up a trellis as well. Well, here is a low-cost, easy summer tip. To reduce heat in your house, use light-colored curtains.
If you remember your grade school, you were taught to wear white in the summer instead of black. White reflects the sun's rays while black absorbs them. Dark colors make you hotter. Light colors make you cooler. If you have dark-colored curtains in a window, you may be wasting energy.
If you don't have the money to replace your curtains, you should try to see if there are light-colored curtains in a window that doesn't get much sun and switch those curtains out or just put a piece of white poster board in the window until you can find some decent summertime curtains.
