If you're an apartment dweller, you might think you don't have any place to put your container garden. But there are a lot of possible places if you get creative about it. Here are some ideas:
Fire Escape or Patio If you have a fire escape that gets sunlight, place your containers out here. They'll beautify the exterior of the building while feeding you fresh herbs and vegetables.
Build a Window Box If you don't have a fire escape for your plants, build a window box or a sturdy ledge to place the pots on. Make sure that it is strong enough to hold the weight of damp soil and growing plants.
The Front Steps Rather than mess with building a box, you might want to simply put your pots by the front entrance. They will be a welcoming treat to passers-by and guests.
The Parkway If there's some space between the sidewalk and the street, place your pots there. You might have a vegetable or two pilfered once in awhile, but over all it's a great spot, especially for guerrilla gardening.
Around Lamp Posts Another option is to place your pots around lamp posts near your appartment. Just keep in mind that you'll want to have tall pots to avoid the possibility of a passing dog leaving an unwanted mark on your dinner plants. Also keep in mind city officials might not be to keen about it and remove them. But it's worth a try.
The Roof If you have roof access to your building, put your containers there. They'll get plenty of sunlight, but you'll want to make sure they're watered well during dry months since it'll get hot up there. Rooftop gardens are actually a great solution for urban farmers.
Your Neighbor's Yard If there's absolutely no place for you to put your containers, but there's a spot at a neighboring place, ask if you can borrow a little real estate. Many people will be glad to have some beautiful plants decorating their home that they don't have to fuss with.
