Anyone buying music in the '90s remembers the sheer space that a cd collection took up--racks and racks of plastic jewel cases that now, with mp3s practically standard--are either long gone to the trash or still clogging up your closets in your old bedroom. Now it's time to bring them out of hiding and use them as a backdrop for this one-of-a-kind art idea from Country Living that we picked up from Amber Byfield on Re-Nest.
The project comes from the book Photojojo! Insanely Great Photo Projects and DIY Ideas, but it's easy enough for even a non-photographer: just open a photo of your choice (or grab one from the web); size it to 26.5"x18.25", divide it into twenty squares, and print each on 5"x7" photo paper. Mount each photo on a piece of cardboard to keep it sturdy (we recommend using those boxes you were storing the old cases in as backing) and enclose each square in its own case. Then hang them on your wall--velcro will work, and so will mounting strips--leaving a slim break between each case.
The tutorial at Country Living suggests hanging a still life of fruit in your kitchen, but don't stop there: pull out your favorite sunset photo from this summer's trip to the beach; use an oversized black-and-white candid of your family; or do up your family room with bright color and graphic patterns. You can also use more cases to hang a collage--try putting a different picture in each, or using 26 cases to show off the alphabet in your pre-schooler's room.
