For a weed, dandelions are attractive. Take a look at pig weed or button weed. Those weeds look terrible. And you?d never make a bouquet out of milkweeds unless you were trying to get punched. Dandelions look like flowers and they smell good. But alas and alack, they are considered a weed and get treated thusly. Therefore, when societal pressure forces you to rid your yard of dandelions, do it in an eco-friendly manner. Here's how:
Removal
1. Digging You can cut a dandelion with garden shears, but it will grow right back, unless you nip the problem in the, uhm, root. A dandelion root will produce a new dandelion. You?ll have to dig the dandelion up and remove the entire thing.
2. Vinegar Vinegar can be used to kill the flower, but it will not kill the root. Vinegar kills grass. Be careful.
Prevention
3. Let your Grass Grow Long Let your grass grow to 2 ½ inches to three inches. Short grass allows more dandelions to grow. A push mower is preferred.
4. Avoid Over Watering Most lawns only need 1 inch of water per week to remain healthy. In some climates, you will need less or more. You know the old saying, ?April overwatering brings May dandelions.?
5. Corn Gluten Meal Corn gluten meal applied to your lawn will stop broad leaf weeds (dandelions) from growing there. It will not affect the plants that are already growing there.
