DisneyNature is making the moviegoer experience easy on the planet. In conjuction with the release of its new movie Oceans, DisneyNature protected more than 35,000 acres of coral reefs in The Bahamas on behalf of the moviegoers who came out to see the movie during its opening week.
DisneyNature partnered with The Nature Conservancy's Adopt a Coral Reef program to protect a chunk of coral reefs the size of Manhattan. According to the press release, the 700 islands that comprise The Bahamas contain miles of vital coral reefs, which are the foundation of a healthy ocean environment, providing shelter, nurseries, and feeding grounds for hundreds of marine species. Mickey wrote that human behavior is their biggest threat and 70 percent of coral reefs may be gone in less than 40 years if the present rate of destruction continues.
Currently, the Nature Conservancy is defining new marine protected area boundaries, resulting in increasing the total protected area from 300,000 acres to more than a million acres.
