DIYers Get Crafty To Aid Haiti
Before the massive earthquake hit Haiti a week ago, the extremely impoverished country had already been teetering on the brink of catastrophe. Now this country is dealing with a massive disaster, the likes of which will require consistent doses of comprehensive aid of the most basic kind: food, clean water, shelter, medical facilities and doctors.
I view the photos and read the news reports through tears. The suffering and pain seems insurmountable. It's hard to wrap your mind around what these poor people feel, but many of us feel the tug of wanting to do more.
Even Meryl Streep in her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes made reference to her feeling about the Haitian earthquake disaster. Streep said she was torn between putting on her "happy movie-star face" knowing what was going on in the real world. She said she thought of her mother, who would have advised her to be grateful that she has the money to donate to Partners in Health.
Most of us are not movie stars with multi-million dollar bank accounts. We've been told that sending cash is what Haiti needs in the earthquake's aftermath. Given the current economic situations of many Americans, financial solvency may not allow for large fiscal giving. So, what more can be done?
Crafters and DIYers are responding to the plea for help in the best way they know...by making usable stuff.
One such crafter Jade Sims, who founded the organization Craft Hope as a way to share handmade goods with the less fortunate, has sprung to action, collecting donated wares from crafters in the Etsy community. The Etsy store, Craft Hope for Haiti has a fabulous collection of unique items that are being donated to Doctors Without Borders.
With recycled materials and very little or no cash, you can make stuff to aid Haiti too. Here are two ways to help:
1.Make something and donate or post it on one of the sites below.
2. Buy a handcrafted item from one of the sites.
