UnBoxing my DoLeaf seedling shipment
Jaymi Heimbuch
A few weeks ago, DoLeaf - a website that connects gardeners to herb and veggie buyers via the Internet, in an Etsy.com kind of way - offered to send me a shipment of plants so that I could do an unboxing and share with you my experience of their product.
At first I was hesitant. I live in San Francisco, so I can waltz down the the local farmers' market and pick up organic seedlings from local growers for my garden. Why would I cause carbon emissions by having seedling shipped to me from a gardener in the mid-west? But not everyone is so lucky to have organic, heirloom plants so readily available. That was, after all, why I got excited about DoLeaf and their great services in the first place.
So I said, "Sure!" I picked a gardener - Wilham Farm Market - and ordered seedlings. I chose:
Tomatoes: Sweet Millions (4 pack) Tomatoes: Golden Jubilee (one 4-inch pot) Cilantro (4 pack) Spinach (4 pack) Golden Acre Cabbage (4 pack)
The total price was just shy of $35 including shipping. This seemed not too expensive, considering a buyer is getting organic plants sent right to their door. I was told a little later that the spinach wasn't ready to ship just yet and so will ship later, but the rest of the package was on its way. I wasn't home when the package arrived and I needed to sign for it, so I picked it up the following day at the post office. I figured that one extra day wouldn't do much harm to the plants, even if they were getting a bit dry from their journey.
