Every Monday in our Eco Memo series, we offer you practical tips on how to green your work life. This week, we look at ways to reduce the waste created by delicious office snacks.
Who doesn't love it when people bring goodies to the office? Bagels, doughnuts, cupcakes — doesn't matter much to me if it's healthy, just so long as it's free and yummy. But my office is small, and the few of us who work there are, by and large, picky eaters, which makes me wonder, why do people bring in a lot of one thing? Just because a dozen is the amount doughnut purveyors in which prefer to sell their rings of delicious evil doesn't mean that?s how many you have to buy when there are only eight people in your office, three of whom don't go near refined sugar without gloves and a mask on.
A lot of food goes to waste when we bring in office treats without considering what amount is sure to be consumed. Yes, you don't want to go under and leave some poor soul in distress because she missed out on your to-die-for German chocolate cupcakes, but take notice. If one day you bring in ten bagels, and three go stale and are tossed in the trash, next time, bring in eight bagels. Or take the stale ones home and make bagel chips.
Just be observant and bring in only the food that your office will consume or that you are willing to take home. That way, you save money, decrease food waste, and bring culinary happiness to your office.
