There's really no greener source of food. It's no secret that having a garden means that your food doesn't have to travel any distance to get to your plate, it's fresher, cleaner, and way cheaper. But gardening can be intimidating. The idea of starting from scratch can seem like a huge hassle. But my new series on easy green gardening should make that feat just a little easier. This week we'll be learning how to keep your garden in tip top shape during these harsh winter months.

- To rake or not to rake.

If you have a large garden with grass it doesn't really matter if you choose to rake or not. But smaller plots, or flowerbeds next to large trees can get drowned with leaves in the fall. A massive layer of leaves can impact the ph level of your soil. Raking these leaves prevents the acidity of the soil from increasing.

- Protection is the most important part of enduring the winter.

Apply mulch to the floor of the garden if you don't have it already especially if you live in an area that experiences incredibly harsh winters. Think of it as a security blanket for your garden. Protect small bushes with mulch around the base of the plant. Bring your potted plants inside.

- Mist the plants you've brought in from the outside.

Your plants are used to more humidity than your heated house can give them. One way to humidify potted plants is by constantly misting them to keep them moist.

- Drain hoses and put them in the basement or the garage so they don't freeze.
