Sometimes what you need to do more than anything else is fall in love with the city in which you live again. It's easy to daydream about vacation trips you could embark on, but a lot of people find themselves doing this before they've really explored their own cities. I know because I am one of those people.
Traveling the world is great and important, if you ask me, but there's something to be said for really diving into the city in which you live, even if you've been there for years.
Taking some time off to really explore every corner of your city is not only exciting, but it is also green. The fewer flights and train rides you book, the less energy that is spent on travel. You will also save money.
Tips for falling in love with your city all over again:
1. Use the internet
When you first moved to your city, the internet may not have been as great of a resource as it is today. From small book and record stores to eco-friendly restaurants, there may have been places you couldn't have found out about before that you can find out about now. Make a long list of things you'd love to do in your city and then use the internet to do all of the research involved with making the activities on your list a reality. Also, be sure to check out our own City Guides here on Planet Green.
2. The newspaper
As obvious as it may seem, a lot of people get used to their cities once they've been there for a while and they stop looking for new things to do and see in the newspaper. Do yourself a favor and actually flip through to the events section of your newspaper today and see what kind of cool stuff is going on that you'd like to be a part of. (And don't forget to recycle your newspaper when you're through with it.)
3. Get involved
Find a way to volunteer for your city and tons of new doors will open for you. You'll begin finding out about concerts you may not have otherwise known about, group meetings, gallery showings, etc. It's important to mix up your social circle if you want to avoid getting bored with a city.
Taking time to appreciate your city might just be the best thing you do for yourself and the environment when you take vacation time this year.
