Boulder's Sylvia Bernstein thinks that hydroponic gardening and fresh fish farming go together like chocolate and peanut butter—aquaponics is Bernstein's Reese's Peanut Butter Cup.

She raises fish at home and uses their poop as fertilizer, a relationship that makes good use of fish waste, which she sees as the largest problem with conventional aquaculture, while eliminating the need for chemical fertilizers often used in hydroponics. I don't eat fish, but if I did, raising your own seems like the most sustainable way to do so—while living up to the local food mantra for veggies as well.

Aquaponics is not necessarily a new idea, but... how many people (former marketing professionals, no less) do you know experimenting with it in their own backyards? Pretty cool.
