As we celebrate this the greenest day of the year (and at Planet Green, the greenest month) let us not forget the next generation of green. Seriously, children that grow up green are more likely to pass that knowledge on to their children and Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to instill some great green info. Remember that your kids learn about conservation and the importance of protecting the environment from you. Kids that grow up hitting the farmers' market every week won't settle for produce that travels across the country.
Whether your kid-friendly Earth Day activities are coordinated within your community or just something that you came up with at home, there is no better time to pass on some green knowledge.
A Little Earth Day Party
KD's Treehouse owners in Columbia, S.C. organized this event Saturday, April 18 from 10 am to 3 pm. The party is designed to educate kids in the importance of getting involved in a greener community. Amuse the kids with interactive science experiments, arts and crafts, story telling, music, and organic pizza. Admission is free. RSVP to the event by contacting Kris Burns or Dea Baughman at 803.748.0198.
Earth Day Music Fest and Expo
This is one of those activities where both you and the kids can have fun. With tons of great music and a stunning outdoor venue, what more could you and the kids ask for? Enjoy local bands, green vendors, green food, and an art contest. Check it out April 18 from 11 am to 6 pm in Grand Park, Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Plan Your Own Earth Day Kid's Fun
Enroll your kids in a nature class like those offered at New Canaan Nature Center in New Canaan, Conn. Both the summer and after school programs at New Canaan Nature Center teach children to notice the biodiversity around them while giving them a touchstone for understanding the sciences. A wide variety of programs enroll children as young as two years old.
Head out to your favorite local farms and introduce your kids to the farmers. Have them ask questions about the way things are grown and what grows well in their area. This is also an awesome opportunity for you to get to know your local farmers so you can ensure you're buying the best Mother Nature has to offer.
