The rooster wasn't even crowing when I opened my eyes. Even the goats were quiet. The usual morning clamor would arrive with the sunrise in two hours but for now our property was murmuring night sounds. I quickly got up, pulled on my clothes, and followed the intoxicating aroma of coffee down the stairs. Marc, husband and designated coffee maker, was there filling my cup.

Within a few minutes our children began to trickle down the stairs one at a time. It was a special day for us. We were headed out on a family adventure; our yearly trek to an East Texas, pick your own blueberry farm. We would return with as much of the fruit as we could pick before the sun convinced us to go home.

I am a strong proponent of buying local foods whenever possible. It is difficult sometimes, and sometimes there are reasons that you just can't find what you need, or the price is too high. Pick your own, or U-Pick-Em farms as they are known here, allow you to stock up on fresh produce in both a family and budget friendly way.
