Maybe you know him from his SNL skits or for bringing sexy back, but don't think for a second that pop phenomenon Justin Timberlake doesn't have his priorities straight when it come to going green. He's shown his support for green sports by buying a golf course (which he renamed Mirimachi) and then giving it a green upgrade. Now you golfers out there have one more option for eco-friendly golfing. So next time you, golf be sure to golf green.
Timberlake originally bought the golf course for sentimental reasons?it was the first place his dad taught him how to hit a ball, he said in a PGA Tour interview. After he bought the course, the green wheels started turning. According to the interview, Justin Timberlake said:
What Makes JT's Golf Course Green?
First of all he had an old golf course renovated rather than plowing down trees and natural landscapes to build a new course. It is also the first golf course to receive Audubon International's "Audubon Classic Sanctuary" certification.
Green plans for the golf course include:
- LEED certified buildings—the clubhouses and other buildings are certified at the highest level
- Irrigation and drainage systems that re-use and maximize the use of rainwater
- Electric golf-carts powered by solar panels
- Walking trail, complete with public seating, with educational placards about renewable energy and natural resources
How You Can Be a Green Golfer
JT doesn't have to be the only one to support green golfing. You can join him by making sure you use the greenest golf equipment possible. Also, if there is a green golf course in your area, be sure to choose that one over a non-green course. If there is no eco-friendly course around, encourage your local course to go green, with LEED certified buildings and water conservation.
