Prom: It can be exciting, romantic, fun, elegant, and to top it all off, GREEN! Here are 6 parts of prom that can easily be greened
The Dress The most important part of the ensemble is also the easiest to green! There are more hip, green lines and green designers than ever. And a recycled dress is a great way to seek out something that other's aren't likely to be wearing (and to make life easier on the wallet, too). America Ferrara's look at the Emmy's is a perfect model of vintage-chic.
The Makeup/Skin Care Prep your face with a quick tea bag facial and clench your teeth and give yourself an organic wax. For a natural look, copy Jenna Fischer's subtly sparkly eyes and shimmery lips. For dramatic eyes, take a page out of Mary Louise Parker's book of purple shades. Don't forget to apply your homemade deodorant before heading out the door.
The Hair A few days before, prep your hair with a homemade deep conditioner. For sexy, tousled waves, apply a bit of homemade hairspray and try one of these heatless options (note: test it out before the big night!). A tip for up-dos: wash you hair the day before, rather than the day of, so it isn't so slippery, squeaky-clean. 2nd-day hair stays up and holds rigid style better.
The Flowers Just because they're pretty doesn't mean that flowers don't have a carbon footprint of their own. Craft a corsage or boutonniere out of locally picked blooms, or seek out carbon-neutral flowers from companies like Organic Bouquet.
The Dinner Choose a green restaurant for your pre-prom meal. Check out our Green City Guides for restaurant listings, or use the Slow Food website to find restaurants involved in the local chapters of the organization. Or cook your own green dinner
The Transportation There are plenty of options for green transportation beyond overpriced and overrated limos. At the very least, gather a group of friends and carpool. Taking public transportation could make for some fun photo ops, and riding bicycles is a super alternative way to roll up to the dance. For an intimate ride for two, find a bicycle rickshaw (aka pedicab) company in your area (pedicabs are the new horse-drawn carriage).
