The problem with public restrooms is that they are open to the public and that means anyone can use them. This makes using a public restroom quite the daunting task. Even in the nicest of juke joints, the bathroom can be an utter nightmare. Horrible, ignorant graffiti on the walls, unwanted bodily fluids are deposited there and the smell, it's just awful.

How can we make the public restroom, a bastion of fluorescent lighting, plungers, drains and tile flooring, a greener place to be? Well, here are a few tips.

1. Don't Flush the Urinal That urinal doesn't need to be flushed every time. Let the next fellow do it and save some water.

2. Use Little Paper Try to dry your hands on one paper towel and use as little toilet paper as possible. Better yet, opt for energy efficient hand dryers like XLERATORs instead of paper altogether.

3. Don't Flush Trash Only flush away human waste. Never flush away garbage. It can cause problems in the sewer system, which costs resources.

4. Don't Graffiti You might think your graffiti is funny, but it's not. Someone has to clean that up, and they might not use eco-friendly products to do so.

5. Wash Hands Correctly Get hands wet. Turn off water. Apply soap. Lather. Turn water on. Rinse. Turn water off.

6. The Toilet Seat is Not Unhealthy The likelihood that you can get sick from a toilet seat is so infinitesimally small that we haven't changed the way we go to the bathroom in hundreds of years. Don't waste paper by covering the toilet seat with toilet paper. The biggest health risk in the bathroom is the towel roller. Watch out for that.
