You might think you have to go outside to grow herbs, but your sunny window sills could be put to good use, and made to look magnificent, just by placing a few pots blooming with your favorite spices.
Requirements for Growing Most herbs are perfectly happy with the light they can gather from a south-facing window sill that gets at least 5 to 6 hours of sunshine a day. Giving them just enough water so the soil stays lightly damp, keeping them trimmed (easy, since the point of growing them is so you can prune and eat them!), and adding a little compost from your compost bin every few months is all they'll really require.
Choosing Herbs
The best herbs for window sill gardens are those that stay dense and compact. Oregano is a great option, as is thyme. Mints are also perfect, and come in a wide range of flavors. Parsley also does well indoors if you keep it trimmed. None of these herbs require very large pots, and stay quite happy in smaller 4-6" containers that fit nicely on a sill.
Resources for Planting
Start with choosing the right container from things you have already laying around the house. Find exactly the seeds or starts you want to use, and gather enough compost for your pots. Plant your herbs according to the growing recommendations, put them in a sunny spot, keep them watered, and wait for your sprouts!
Enjoy your Herbs
Be sure to get the most out of the herbs you grow—after all, you've put love and care into seeing them flourish. Use them in salads and other unexpected places for added flavor, in addition to the other cooking recipes you use them in.
If you're finding your herbs are growing faster then you can cook them up, try ( freezing them ) or making them into wonderfully scented sachets
