Make Your Own Rain Sticks: Decorate and Reuse at Same Time

Rain sticks don't have to be just for children. In fact, they are really great additions to any home if done the right way. The best part? They can be made completely from things around your home. Rain sticks are a great way to make use of the loose items in your junk drawers, not to mention paper towel/toilet paper tubes. Since they're so wonderfully crafted and sold in many gift stores, many adults write off homemade rain sticks as a project just for kids. I beg to differ! Here's what I did for a rain stick once that still eloquently decorates my home-you can do it, too!

Combine paper towel, poster, and toilet paper tubes so that you can achieve the length you'd like for your rain stick. Seal the pieces together...packing tape tends to be strong enough and works best. Use a bottle cap or piece of cardboard to seal up one end. Fill the tube with whatever you can find around the house that you no longer use: nails, corn kernels, beans, rice, etc.

Once you've filled the tube with these things, seal up the open end the same way you sealed up the first end.

Now is the time for decoration. Decoration is what will turn your rain stick into something that can truly be a part of your home or not. Use spare fabrics and paints to make your rain stick a piece of art that will fit into one of the rooms of your home.

They make great additions to the house and they are great ways to reuse materials!
