I have wanted to grow my own edible mushrooms for a long time, but especially since reading RJ Ruppenthal's fantastic book, Fresh Food From Small Spaces. He notes in the book that mushrooms are one of those crops you can grow with no yard or outdoor area at all -- in fact, he mentions growing mushrooms in his unused basement bathtub!
Mushrooms are a bit of a mystery to most gardeners, but there is no question that more of us would grow them if we knew how. Can you imagine having your very own colony of morel or chanterelle mushrooms? Or being able to finally figure out why you have mushrooms growing in your lawn?
So, yes, I'm interested in mushrooms. One of my garden blogging pals on Twitter, @MrBrownThumb, tweeted a link a while back to the Cornell Mushroom Blog, published by the Cornell Department of Plant Pathology. While it does cover topics like how to start your own mushroom colony and information about being a truffle farmer, the blog also deals with the ecological impact of different fungi, including invasive species. It's a great read if you're even a little bit of a plant and nature geek. It is the go-to site for all things fungus.
