The process of making paint isn't as mysterious and complex as it may seem. All paint requires are pigments for color, fillers for opacity and coverage, and most important, some type of binder or glue so it doesn't slide off the wall. Everything else is just dressing.

Natural Home has not just one, but four recipes for nontoxic, homemade paints you can make from casein (a milk protein) or starch from grain flour. Many traditional cultures used flour-such as rice, rye, and potato-to create a starchy binder, with clay as a filler and pigment.

One downside to starch-and-clay paints. They''re not water-resistant, so they're appropriate only for interior use. The mag recommends coating painted surfaces, however, with a glaze of linseed oil and citrus thinner, casein emulsion, or a silicate primer for extra protection. ::Natural Home
