Taking your own soap with you while traveling is easy and green.
If we ran out of soap when I was a little girl, my mother would tell us to just use shampoo as shower gel. This always seemed strange to me when I was younger, but now I understand that the two are really one and the same. Most D.I.Y. shower gel recipes out there call for a base of unscented shampoo. And here we were buying two separate products, believing they are two separate things...
If you have some extra unscented shampoo around, you can make your own shower gel that's perfect for travel and avoid consuming the tiny hotel soaps that just get thrown out when you're done using them, anyway.
How to make your own shower gel:
1. Locate your unscented shampoo.
Fill a 3oz travel container (which you can get at any drug store) halfway with your shampoo base.
2. Locate your 'scents'.
I wanted vanilla shower gel and happened to have some extra vanilla in my kitchen, so that's what I used. You can use vanilla, 5-8 drops of your favorite essential oil, or anything else non-perishable that you think may smell nice. If you're using vanilla, a tablespoon is enough.
3. Locate your 'exfoliator'.
You don't need to make an exfoliating shower gel, but I did. Why? Because it's easy when you're making your own shower gel. Many seeds will exfoliate your skin nicely. I only had sesame seeds around, but they'll do the trick. A pinch will do. 4. Fill the rest of the bottle with water and shake! Enjoy! Making your own shower gel is a great way to make use of extra shampoo you already had and reduce your consumption while traveling, too. If you only have scented shampoo around the house, guess what? You can just use that as shower gel. My mama taught me right.
