El Cid, the century-old flamenco dinner theater built by D.W. Griffith, is a stylish Los Angeles landmark, and though there's little need in balmy LA to keep heating costs low, the crimson portieres, or curtains hung in doorways, reminded me of just that. Portieres, after all, are a great way of keeping your house's temperature up and your heating costs low.

Whether in your bedroom doorway or the entrance to a long corridor, adorn your doorway with some organic cotton sashes, such as those from Anna Sova, or any leftover fabrics you haven't had the heart to toss. The portiere won't just dress up the doorway, it will impinge the draft headed in your direction, provide the illusion of space in cramped areas, and add a touch of festivity when the days grow shorter. Don't forget, you non-Angelenos, fall is coming.
