If you need to create a new garden bed, but don't want to resort to harsh chemicals, try this technique from the March 2008 issue of Martha Stewart Living. Lay stacks of four to six sheets of newsprint side by side on the grass, overlapping edges, to mark the desired shape of the bed. Then, soak the paper with a hose or watering can, and cover with 2 inches of mulch.
You can choose to plant directly in the prepared area, or use a trowel to pierce through the newsprint. ::Martha Stewart Living
