Like me, you probably worry about an odd late frost or strong gust of wind undoing early preparations in your garden should you move too soon. Nevertheless, it's always a good idea to plan ahead and prepare for the gardening that awaits the new season.

Get planning

First, grab a pen and paper and walk the garden. Do some critiquing. For example, you may remember that you had a problem with a fungus attacking the bulbs in one of your beds last spring. You may consider planting the new ones in another part of the garden. You might also remember that the flowers that you planted near the apple tree did not do so well last year. You may decide to move them to a sunnier area this spring.

Plant indoors first

Plant your seeds indoors so that you can look after them properly. This could reduce your losses to that odd frost. They should be planted in a shallow well drained container along with some good compost. Keep them warm, moist, and well lit.

Do some upkeep

This is a great time to catch up on any mulching, pruning, and leave removal that you might need to do to get ready for the planting season.

Clean your bird feeders

The birds need a good spring cleaning as well. Be sure to remove any soggy or frozen seeds from the bottom. Then simply rinse the feeders with warm water and a stiff brush. Avoid soap and harsh chemicals, such as chlorine, that could harm animals or deter birds from stopping.
