Last week, I posted on the government's Weatherization Assistance Program. It's a program that helps under-funded homeowners weatherize their domiciles, reduce their energy costs and combat global warming all at the same time. Well, that's not the only program that the government provides for people looking to improve the energy efficiency of their home.

Energy Star has a program called Energy Star Home Performance. You don't have to fall into any specific income-tax bracket to qualify for this program, but you do have to live in an area with a sponsored contractor. The contractor will come to your home and do a whole-house assessment. Instead of focusing on a specific area like windows or heating/cooling, the contractor will assess the overall energy efficiency of the house. After an evaluation of your home and possibly your utility bills, the contractor will make cost-effective recommendations.
