Not much has been written on the subject of garage doors. No one has written a novel about a garage door who has an existential crisis. There aren't any action films where the plot revolves around a garage-door heist, and a cartoon about a talking garage door would probably put kids to sleep or scare them. They are the unsung heroes of the house. They are both wall and door.

You can insulate a garage door to add some energy efficiency in the garage. Another great way to help the environment is by reclaiming instead of buying one new.

Here's how it is done:

1. Get a friend or two. Garage doors are heavy.

NOTE: Torsion springs can be deadly. In some places they are illegal to remove yourself. Torsion springs run along the top of the garage door like a big springy snake. You should contact a professional to remove those kinds of springs.

2. Unplug the garage door opener if applicable.

3. Find the extension springs located above the upper tracks on both sides. They should decompress when you open the door. Of course, there are probably exceptions to that rule. Just make sure that the spring is decompressed before you start.

4. Remove springs. There is a good chance that someone will have to hold the door up while you remove the springs. Otherwise this could be dangerous. You can also clamp or tie the door open, but I recommend human help over any device.

5. Remove the tension cables.

6. Lower the door.

7. Remove the pins from the bracket. Loosen the bracket.

8. Remove the nuts and bolts from the panels. Start at the top of the door and work down. Continue until finished.

9. Load garage door into truck.
