Recycled content carpets are the trendy new floor toupees that we have been waiting for. These carpets are far from magical, but they are green Steve Thomas has knee-kicked a few of these innovative carpets into place on Renovation Nation.
Magic carpets, by the way, defy the laws of science and nature, and if they did exist, they might cause all sorts of irreparable damage to the space-time continuum which isn?t very green at all. But I digress.
A recycled content carpet, if you can't tell by the name, is made out of post-consumer goods. The most common materials in recycled carpets are soda pop bottles, discarded carpeting and other textiles. It is a verifiable floor-Frankenstein that?s just as green.
The environmental benefits are obvious: Using post-consumer goods is usually better for the planet than buying a product that is manufactured new. No fresh trees or plants need be harvested and no further resources need be dug up and extracted from the ground.
Recycled content carpets hold their colors better, provide better in-house air quality and have greater stain resistance. They perform the same as conventional carpeting which isn't very hard because carpets just sort of lie there, all soft and immobile.
There is very little downside to recycled content carpets. The biggest problem is scarcity. Recycled content carpeting may not be available in every city, and it probably won?t be available in as many colors, but it is available in Planet Green!
