We all like our clothes. We wear them to protect our bodies from the elements and to look good in front of prospective suitors. In turn, we like to protect our clothing from harm. One thing that can really damage our clothing is gum.
Gum is a mystery substance. It's not quite food, but we put it in our mouths, taste it and spit it out. Gum never really biodegrades. It will be with us forever. When humans evolve a sixth finger and giant balding foreheads, we'll still find gum stuck to the bottoms of our interoceptors and mood organs.
Back to the subject: There are a lot ways to get gum out of clothes. Some methods include using industrial greases, canned air and gasoline. There are better ways to get rid of gum. Here are 3.
1. Heated Vinegar and a Toothbrush
Pop a tiny amount of vinegar into the microwave. Cook until warm. Use an old toothbrush to scrub out gum with toothbrush dipped in heated vinegar. Some suggest pouring boiling vinegar over the gum to dissolve it.
2. The Knife and Boiling Water Method
Submerge gummy clothing in boiling water. Let it soak. Scrape off gum. Careful not to damage the fabric. Repeat as needed.
3. The Ice and Knife Method
Freeze the entire garment or apply ice to the gummed area. When gum is frozen, scrape off the gum. Careful not to damage the fabric.
