Windows are made of fragile, fragile glass, and they can easily end up getting smashed in by a baseball, a stone or even a smaller window that somebody threw during a fight. Whatever the cause, are bound to need replacement. I've never known anyone to take the windows out of their house when they move. So as far as reclaiming goes, they'll be ripe for the plucking.

Here is how to pluck:

1. You should wear protective goggles. Glass is sharp. Your eyes are fragile. Protect them. Gloves are also a good idea.

2. Get a utility knife. Run the blade between the window sash and the window casing. Cut away at the caulk and paint that?s holding the casing and the sash together. For simplicity?s sake, go outside and run the knife around the outer casing. It might not be necessary, but if you?re working alone, you?ll be glad you did it at this step now instead of later.

3. Now you need to remove the inside stops. A stop is that piece of wood that is nailed to window frame that holds the window sash in place. Use a putty knife to get at those stops out.

4. Use your putty knife to remove the metal track.

5. Once the stops are out, you should be able to remove the lower sash. The top and bottom may be connected by sash cords. Cut these.

6. Remove the stops holding in the upper window sash. Use the putty knife.

7. The top sash should slide right out. If it doesn't, check for nails and other impediments.
