If you like the look of wallpaper but are not happy about the price or the VOC's that will be emitted from it for the next fifty years you may want to consider the old fashioned technique of stenciling. In years past it was a way for the lower classes to have the look of wallpaper inexpensively. Today it serves a similar purpose. In fact, all faux painting techniques arose out of the desires of the lower classes to be surrounded by the same beauty that royalty was - but without the expense.
When you stencil with 0 VOC paints you end up with clean walls and clean air. It looks much more difficult than it is. It took me three days to stencil my large parlor by myself but I love how it looks and most people believe it is wallpaper until they are told otherwise.
