Support Your Local Quarry
Quarries get a bad rap. In the movies, mobsters are always throwing dead bodies into them. Sometimes people drown there. Teens are always getting busted for underage drinking at the quarry. The quarry is not a thing of beauty. It's a big desolate hole, located somewhere near the edge of town. No one goes to the quarry to marvel at it?s beauty. There are no Pulitzer Prize-winning photos called "Dusk Falls at the Quarry."
Quarries, for the time being at least, are a necessary eyesore. They provide us with the materials that we need to make the materials that we need to build houses, roads and skyscrapers that we need.
When purchasing stones for your home, garden or rock collection, it is wisest to buy locally. It is much wiser to buy stone from your region than it is for almost any other product. Why?
Stone is heavier than most things. Yes. I know that a pound of stone weighs as much as a pound of feathers. Think about this though. How many feathers does it take to comprise a pound? A whole mess. You don't get that much when you buy a pound of stone.
Take that logic to semi-trucks. You can cram a semi-truck full of feathers and ship it across the country, and you can cram a semi-truck full of stone and ship it as well. Rules regarding density tell me that the semi filled with stone is going to weigh a bit more.
The heavier a vehicle is the more gas it takes to move it. Shipping stone from far away is bad for the environment. If you do plan to buy stone make sure that it was mined locally. Support your local quarry.
