I recently moved in with my girlfriend, and it's going to be our first xmas together. We decided to go all out with decorations this year, partly because it's just plain fun, but also because here in Canada it gets very dark and cold during the winter, and if you don't have something cheery and colorful, you risk getting winder blues.
In any case, I wanted to turn the apartment into a joyful place for the holidays, but I realized that we don't have any decorations or ornaments of any kind. What's the green thing to do?
Certainly not buying new decorations. Our landfills are probably full of those because most people over 40 have probably been accumulating them over the years and have boxes full of them that they don't know what to do with.
So instead of buying more plastics crap, I decided to let people in my family know that I was looking for decorations, and if they had anything they wanted to get rid of, I'd be happy to take it off their hands. Turns out, my parents had many boxes of stuff they never used anymore and didn't know what to do with; that was enough for us, but if it hadn't been, it turns out a few of my aunts also had boxes full of the stuff.
So the greenest decoration is the one that already exists and that isn't being used. The only thing that I think would be worth buying new is LED lights. They are much more energy efficient than the old incandescent lights and last so much longer, and this makes them worth buying.
