Too Glamorous To Be Environmentalists?
Not. That was the theme of the evening at the EcoStiletto Second Anniversary bash hosted at Rolling Greens Nursery in Hollywood. According to Eco Stiletto founder Rachel Lincoln-Sarnoff, "Someone at the event said to me that the guests didn't look like environmentalists--they were way too glamorous!" That's the mission of EcoStiletto in a nutshell--to show people that you don't have to sacrifice style for sustainability—and they illustrate that mission well. Over 400 very well dressed people attended to celebrate and learn about a variety of sustainable products, from the new Audi A3 TDi courtesy of LACarGuy/Green Family of Dealers, recently named "2010's Green Car of the Year" all to Waterpik's water-saving shower heads and everything in between. While perusing and mingling with fellow greenies and those curious enough to come check it out, guests nibbled on vegan appetizers by chef Makini Howell of Seattle's famed Plum Bistro restaurants, who created a pop-up menu for the night at the WorldFare Bustaurant. Thirsty guests sipped organic cocktails by O.N.E. Natural Experience and 360 Organic Vodka, organic wine by Yellow + Blue and organic beer by Eel River Brewing Company, all dispensed and served in recyclable containers (of course). For those seeking a delicious non-alcoholic refreshment, Zhena's Gypsy Tea was on hand to whip up their signature Coco Chai Tea Lattes, and share samples of a variety to fair trade, organic teas from their Biodynamic collection. Tipping the scales toward sin (the good kind) were the decadently sweet, vegan, organic dark chocolate truffles by Nicobella…surely not an exercise is sacrifice in the name of environmental and social responsibility!
The non-nibbling or imbibing were wowed by the Marie Antoinette costume, made entirely of movie set waste by The Sustainable Sirens; saw the brand-new LED event lighting by AirStar, and learned about sustainable personal and home care products by Tom's of Main and Greenworks. Guests enjoyed free mini eco-makeovers by Jane Iredale Cosmetics and eyebrow threading by Marco Ochoa of Eco Brow, now at L.A.'s hottest eco-beauty boutique, Evolue. Those that were feeling lucky entered to win a sustainable Edge bed (a $4000 value) crafted of recycled materials by Environment Furniture. (Psst....you can still enter here to win the bed) The eco active got to learn about Project Green Search and even kiss and sign the Teens Turning Green petition, "Lips Against Lead" to support their new Los Angeles chapter. (Looking for more news on lead in lipstick and more? Be sure to check out the latest film by Annie Leonard, The Story of Cosmetics.)
While their might not have been a fee to attend, the price for entry this evening was one good deed, in the form of a work-ready purse to donate to Dress for Success, the non-profit organization that provides interview suits, confidence boosts, and career development to low-income women in over 75 cities worldwide, to support their new Los Angeles headquarters.
Celebrity guests included Josh Zuckerman of "Desperate Housewives," Rachel Avalon, winner of Project Green Search 2009, Daniel Nguyen of "Tori & Dean's Home Sweet Hollywood," Challen Cates from "Big Time Rush," Bravo's The Bender Sisters, Allison Deyette of "How Do I Look?" Fernanda Romero of "Hunter's Moon," Maria Elena from "Kill the Habit," Sophie Uliano, author of Gorgeously Green, and Kim Barnouin, co-author of Skinny Bitch and founder of Healthy Bitch Daily. While they may not be quite as high profile as the aforementioned, the party was also well attended by a bevy of everyday eco heroes, including Taryn Hipwell of EcoDivasTV, Siel Ju of Green LA Girl, Magda Rod of Visionary, celebrity stylist Phu Styles, Lauren Selman of Reel Green Media, LA Green Drinks organizer Elizabeth Zampolli, Eco Vegan Gal Whitney Lauritsen, Summer Bowen, proprietress of BTC Elements, Erin Maloney Harris, founder of Chill Out La, founder of The Red, White and Green Jennifer Grayson, Carolyn Scott-Hamilton, founder of The Healthy Voyager and last but certainly not least, Your Daily Thread founder Tracy Hepler. I've no doubt missed a few, so please chime in if you or someone you know was there. Each and every one of us working to better the environment is "celebrity" status worthy!
When asked what the highlight of the evening was, Rachel responded, "It sounds so trivial, but I had so much fun just getting done up for the party. Rebecca Mink loaned me a pair of her vegan stilettos (they're made from paper!) and I had this awesome thrift store sparkly dress. Leilah from Jane Iredale did my makeup right before everybody got there. And then seeing all the amazing people who've been so supportive over the past two years--everyone in one place! It was awesome."
Sometimes, it's the little things.
