This week, the Threadbanger team takes their cues from the remake of Fame, whipping up a patterned carryall with just enough room for your dance clothes, gym sneakers, or workout gear in this duffel bag tutorial.
The twist here is that Corinne gets her raw material from old umbrellas—which, if you've ever been stuck under one that's blown inside out, you'll know don't have much use once they break. Cut six inch squares from your old umbrellas (here, she mixed solid black with animal print and classic plaid, but you can use any colors or patterns you have in your closet). The straps are courtesy of two classic '80s rainbow belts, which are sturdy enough for hauling your duds, but if yours are long gone to Goodwill, check your local thrift store for other belts that coordinate with the fabrics you've chosen.
While this project is a little more advanced than some of the more basic bag tutorials out there, it's not too complicated for crafters with some sewing experience—and the end result is a water-resistant bag that didn't require buying anything new.
