Build a Worm-A-Rator to Keep Your Worm Composters Cool and Productive

Building a worm compost box for your home or apartment is one of the easier projects that even the most mechanically disinclined of us can attempt and succeed at. Get a box, poke some air and drainage holes in it and fill the thing with compost. The tricky part is balancing all the elements, so your compost box doesn't stink up the place.

Instructables contributor Coopdaddi has invented a super-smart variation on the time-honored worm bin. He got the idea when the worms in his run-of-the-mill vermicomposter seemed a little pooped. Mr. Coopdaddi researched his sluggish worm problem and came to the conclusion that his worms were too wet and too hot. The worms and Coopdaddi are from Texas and often 100+ degree heat in the summerime.

To fix this problem, Coopdaddi rigged up a water circulation system that pulls heat from the compost. Coop managed to lower temperature in his compost bin to a cool 78 degrees.

And then, if that wasn't enough, a fan powered by an old solar cell was added to the box in order to draw in the cool night air.

If your worms are plagued by the terrible summer heat, this marvelous invention can cool them. Learn how to build your own Worm-A-Rator.
