Being a green woman has its difficulties. It's easier now than ever to score some organic and natural makeup from the local drug store, but those products are still limited and, in most cases, significantly more expensive than the chemical-ridden makeup that many women use without a second thought. I started making my own makeup a while ago in an effort to go green by reducing my unnecessary product consumption, wear makeup with ingredients I recognize, and save money. If you can get your hands on a beet, making your own colored lip gloss is easy. This recipe can also double as a rub on blush for your cheeks.

How to make tinted lip gloss from a beet

1. Locate your beet.

Note: I'm pretty sure a pomegranate would work for this too, but they're not in season right now. Feel free to try that instead if you have one, though. Strawberries will work too, but you should know that it will take more strawberries to achieve the deep red color that is easily achieved through a beet in this project.

2. Chop your beet up into pieces and heat it. I put mine in the microwave for 40 seconds. The heat brings the red juice out.

3. In a small container (a bottle cap or lid will work), mix your beet juice with a couple drops of olive oil. Mix in powdered sugar until a consistency to your liking is reached.

4. Once the mixture has been made, use a lipstick brush to brush it onto your lips. You can also use a makeup sponge to add color to your cheeks with this mixture.

This recipe is a great way to reduce your own consumption of makeup-industry products all while knowing exactly what's in your makeup.
