When it comes to cutting out the chemicals in your daily beauty routine, plenty of products become expendable and even more are available in organic or all-natural versions. That works well enough for most of us, since giving up soap, shampoo, and toothpaste is a step that only the most dedicated greenies are willing to take.
Or at least, that's what we thought—until we heard about the No 'Poo movement, in which ordinary people with ordinary hair give up bottled shampoo to avoid the chemicals (bonus: they also use less plastic as a result?and it's cheaper). While you can vary the specifics of the process, the basics are simple: massage baking soda or a baking soda-and-water paste into your hair, and rinse with diluted apple cider vinegar (some devotees recommend diluted lime juice for a more pleasant smell). And while it's likely that you'll experience more than a few bad hair days at the beginning, don't worry: that's just your hair replacing all those synthetic oils and moisturizers with the natural ones produced by your scalp.
